Hi Alan,

Well, at least there is now some light at the end of the tunnel. Pity they
didn't do the right thing in the first place but at least his persistence
paid off.

It really bugs me the way some companies try to shirk their responsibilities
any way they can. Others will sometimes go out of their way to help, though,
even if the item is, strictly speaking, out of warranty.

Subject: [Waverley ARS] Re FT897

Tony, VK2FREL at long last has had an outcome with Vertex Melbourne in
relation to his blown up FT897 that seemed to have suffered from a component
going on fire. As the radio was under warranty it was returned to Vertex for
repair. In the initial instance Vertex refused to repair under warranty as
the rig had been modified to work the CB band and request an amount over
$1000 for the repair. This price is dearer than what one can buy a new FT897
for.
Tony pointed out to Vertex that the modification was carried out by the
dealer when he purchased the radio and no one had indicated that this would
void the warranty. This statement had no effect on Vertex and an out right
refusal to repair under warranty was Vertex's position.
Tony then took his complaint to Vertex Hong Kong and after some time ended
up having verbal discourse with Vertex Melbourne todays date. The
interesting point is that Vertex Melbourne claimed that they had request a
payment of only $450.00 for the repair but unfortunately Tony had it in
writing from them for over $1000.00. The other point was the refusal to
repair because of the modification to the rig to operate in the 27Mhz CB
band and in fact the Vertex people had threatened to report Tony to the ACMA
about the modification. Tony called their bluff on this one and said go
ahead as he was quite happy to discuss the issue with the ACMA. The third
point that had been raised was a claim by Vertex that the radio was for the
American market and a suggestion that he had not purchased the rig with a
Benelec sticker on it. This statement made Tony see red and he immediately
contact David at Benelec who looked up his records and confirmed the radio
as being one
that was from his stock. David went further to communicate with Vertex and
the end result is radio being returned to Vertex for repair under warranty
and no charge to Tony.

Thanks indeed to David from Benelec. With a story like this, one has to ask
a serious question about buying Yaesu radios if this is the agony one has to
go through to get repairs under warranty. Tony is out of pocket for the
transportation to and back from Melbourne as well as the phone calls he has
had to make to Hong Kong.
