Hi Simon,

If the US plugpack is a problem, why not get one of the small SMPS ones
available these days such as the Jaycar MP3147 or MP3137 which I use for
both my FT817 and our VX5, 6 & 7s. One of their great features is that you
can put them in adjacent power points. See P212 of the latest Jaycar
cattledog. When I got the radios in HK I left the power supplied behind
because of their weight and bulk as they were UK style plugs. I gave them to
the guys in the office in Macau.

For those who want a unit like this, its probably a good time to buy the 
superceded VX-2R, now heavily discounted, unless money no object. My 
VX-1R is still going after 8 years of admittedly little use, though its 
US plugpack is a little clumsy and needs a step down transformer. I 
guess an updated model is released every 5 years or so.
