If you're really keen to home brew (and I understand the IRLP guys
aren't as open to DIY as many other projects), you can buy the IRLP
card, and a PCI to mini-PCI bridge to use with one of the WRAP or
Soekris "embedded" systems.

I put embedded in quotations because, it's really just a high speed i386
compatible processor; so you can put whatever flavour of Linux / BSD on
it on a compact flash card, and instead of using keyboard, video and
mouse, you use just the serial port like you would in telnet / ssh by
using HyperTerminal in Windows. I think it has to be Linux for IRLP
because they don't support other OSes - but don't quote me on that.

Some of the WRAP and Soekris systems come with embedded WiFi too. I have
one at my mother's house with just the Ethernet and a mini-PCI slot
running a Geode 486 CPU at about 200Mhz. It's about the size of a VHS
cassette. I can show you one day if you like.

Regards,

Adam
