CITY MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

The City will mark World Environment Day next Tuesday with cycle
breakfasts in Pyrmont and Hyde Park and a mini-film festival at the
Chauvel Cinema, Paddington.

Established by the United Nations in 1972, World Environment Day
marks the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment
and provides an opportunity to focus on what we can do to protect the
environment.

This year's theme is "Melting Ice - a Hot Topic?" which has been
selected to support International Polar Year. The theme focuses on the
effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and
communities, and the ensuing consequences around the world.

Cyclists who show their helmets will receive free coffee and pastries
at the City's cycling breakfasts in Union Square, Pyrmont and Hyde
Park South next Tuesday morning. The breakfasts, from 7.30am to 9am,
will thank cyclists for keeping another car off the road. A limited
number of safety kits will also be given away and information will be
available on the City's Cycle Strategy.

Cycling is also the theme of one of the two films screening during
the World Environment Day Film Festival at the Chauvel. On Monday
night, the Chauvel will screen Detour De France, a film about the 2005
Tour De France and a vintage educational film about bicycle safety.
