Brad
Good to see your enthusiastic and thorough approach to the RD Contest.
Of course the key to effective HF operation is antenna antenna antenna -
especially now with HF condx on 20m and above rock bottom due to the adverse
cycle.
I still don't know just what we have at the Club by way of HF ants.? What is
there certainly does not look to be in great shape - but appearances are
sometimes deceptive and I hope I'm wrong..
For a simple wire antenna I think the best bet is about 100 ft long - well
in the clear - and fed with good twin feed (I think proper ladder line is
now available here). This can give efficient multi-band operation with a
good ATU (which I think we have). Twin feed would be easy to install at the
Club.
The "Sky Wire" horizontal loop as used by Laurie and for 160m recently at
the Club is also I think a good non-beam antenna.
Of course nothing will equal a decent beam.
I remind again that I have a Cushcraft A3 3/3 Beam (still sold by
C'craft) in good condition (unused for 20 years) to donate to the Club,
provided that I first know that it will be well installed structurally and
electronically - i.e.high, strong, and in-the-clear.
At the Club we have already a lot going for us. Excellent QTH (adjoining
water) - no electrical interference - no RFI problems - good radios (incl.
a linear). Plus plenty of enthusiasm.
