What a success!
We may not be in the winners circle but club members can be proud of the team effort in last night's Trans Tasman Contest (160M phone section).
Six operators (VK2CEC, VK2FNRD, VK2FLTJ, VK2FDGW, VK2JAH, VK2TUI) racked up a total of 148 contacts for a total of 854 contest points.
It may not be any indication due to propagation variables, but last year's winner made 153 contacts for a score of 1147. The equal third place station then made 154 contacts for a total 800 points.
Considering this was the first contest for some of our operators, and the first contest run as a club station in recent memory, it was a fantastic effort!
The stats show we averaged about 26 QSOs per hour with contacts from VK1,2,3,4,5 & 7 and ZL 1,2,3 & 4.
Not only has it honed our operating skills, it has also raised our antenna "expertise" with our full wave long wire loop proving almost too good to be true! Sure there were some louder stations on air (were they really only running 100 watts?), but all agree our operation went better than expected, even though we missed out on any elusive VK6s.
The contest team is now eagerly looking forward to the next one!
Thanks to all club members for their support during the night and Prezzo Eddie for his encouragement.
And thanks also to those who provided food for the troops; especially Daniel and his mum for the hearty gourmet soup!
