Hi
I received a leaflet today at the HRSA meeting stating that your
organisation, http://radioyesteryear.org.au was researching the above topic.
I am a member of the Waverley Amateur Radio Society originally formed in
1919, with its first transmitter licenced in 1920 using callsign N249.
In 1922 it became 2BV after the PO became responsible for licensing and
in 1929, VK2BV, which is still its callsign today. We believe we were
the first local experimental radio club in Australia. We never held a
broadcasting licence, since at £5 this was more expensive than an
experimental licence, although we did incur the wrath of the local radio
inspector when a member's station transmitted music in 1922. Two club
members conducted the first TV transmission in Australia during 1933
using the Baird revolving disc method.
There is a considerable amount of detail concerning the club's early
history on our website set up in 1995, which again we believe was the
first Australian radio club website. Much of this detail going back to
1919 was obtained from official records in 1985.
If you are interested, see our website at vk2bv.org and click on the
Club History link or contact me for further details.
