Thanks to Colin bringing down a QST magazine I found reference to 
openHSMM Amateur Radio Networking. Hams can operate in the 802.11 
mode using 2.4 GHz and other Amateur Frequencies.

Some Hams in the US are using the WRT-54GL wireless router which runs 
the Linux operating system in Firmware. Can be used with high gain 
antennas and more power.
