Yes that's correct, I have done a couple, one an FT897D, whilst at Benelec.
Take care with the test points.

Subject: Re: FT857D on 6 meters

Hi John,

In the past, some 857/897 rigs, including some D models, have shipped from
the factory with the power amp and exciter transistors biased fairly close
to cut-off. The idling current problem is sometimes not readily apparent on
the HF bands, but it is usually very apparent (fuzzy, muffled, heavily
distorted audio) on 6 meter sideband and I suspect this is what you might be
referring to. My own rig, an 897D, manufactured in June 2004, had a
horrendous issue with 6 meter sideband until I adjusted it. The problem was
also apparent on HF if I attempted to use the speech processor, or if the
SWR foldback engaged itself due to a poor match. Most hams reported that it
sounded like RF feedback on steroids.

I have worked about a half dozen 857/897 rigs purchased in the last 6 months
and they don't seem to be exhibiting this problem anymore. However, even if
your new rig does exhibit this problem, it is very easy to correct (takes
about 20 minutes, including taking the covers of the radio off). The service
manual has the steps for checking and adjusting the exciter and PA resting
current, or if you wish, I have a link with pictures and an explanation of
the steps involved.

When the rig is adjusted correctly the transmit audio is outstanding. Also,
once it is running right, adjusting the carrier insertion point gives you a
full range of adjustment from very clean and natural sounding audio to very
sharp and penetrating audio.

Rob WB1AEX
